Excerpt from Chapter 28, "Not a Cold Winter."

"Unlike John I could leave the base, but sometimes the dog runs did not turn out as expected. I gave Count a chance to redeem himself despite hearing of an episode from the previous year when he had taken the team up an iceberg, and peered over the thirty-foot drop on the other side. We had the usual "begin the run" husky fight, which was quickly sorted out. But Count felt the need for the security of home. He suddenly whipped around, flipped the turned-over sledge upright, and led the Huns back to base. I grabbed the trailing rope hanging from the back of the sledge, and missed. From my prone position I looked at the team heading straight down the glacier towards the ice cliffs beyond Back Bay."
